We recently discovered near the end of a dead-end section of SW 110th Road about a mile or two out of Augusta a stone arch culvert. This stone arch culvert is very similar in many ways to #25 on our stone arch bridge map. Both culverts have been widened on both sides with a concrete arch, and both culverts are fairly sizable.
The Culvert
The culvert is obscured by a concrete arch culvert on both sides, but a look under (or a close look at the roadway, where some stones are visible) reveals a stone arch section right in the middle of the structure.

The stones are moderately sized, and the original arch width is possibly a hair on the narrow side.

The culvert is partially filled in, but what is still aboveground is large enough to suggest that this is a moderately sizable structure.
Conclusion
Augusta Township is said to have built more stone arch culverts than any other township in Butler County, but few of these remain. Those that are known to remain all are very narrow, a fact apparently not completely lost on the public even when these structures were new. The Augusta township stone arch culverts generally had to cope with narrow road width, and unstable foundations, which is probably why so few remain. Since this new discovery near Augusta makes two stone culverts in the area that has been widened on both sides, there is an interesting possibility that there are more culverts like this to be found in Augusta Township, which were overlooked due to being completely obscured from the road. This culvert has been added to our Butler County stone arch bridge list, map number 43.
